What we do

Educational Psychology Assessment Service

An educational psychology assessment is carried out when there is a query about literacy or numeracy skills, or when an individual is underachieving despite the amount of work and effort invested.

The aim of an educational psychology assessment is to gain a better understanding of an individual’s learning needs, to identify if there is an underlying Specific Learning Difficulty (such as Dyslexia or Dyscalculia), and to compile relevant recommendations for parents and educators in order to help the individual reach their academic potential through a positive learning environment.

For children, an assessment is often considered when concerns arise at school regarding academic performance, such as reading, spelling, or numeracy difficulties. It generally consists of an assessment of the individual’s educational attainment skills (reading, spelling, handwriting and numeracy skills) as well as their cognitive abilities.

We also offer adult educational psychology assessments. Often, adults returning to or continuing their education, or adults who may be embarking on a new role within their employment will require an assessment in order to access appropriate accommodations. For others, Dyslexia or Dyscalculia may have always been a question on their minds, and they are curious to explore this further.

An Educational Psychology assessment examines relevant areas of cognitive processing, including working memory and speed of rapid naming, as well as verbal and non-verbal intelligence. This helps to rule out any other possible difficulties (such as a general learning disability), and give the individual and themselves and others an idea of their learning abilities. The assessment also examines relevant areas of literacy and/or numeracy skills (depending on the areas of concerns raised).

The appointment takes approximately 2-2.5 hours. This includes speaking with the psychologist at the beginning, the assessment itself, as well as feedback of results at the end. A written report is then provided within two weeks. This details all the scores, provides information about the tests used, presents the overall findings, and gives detailed recommendations, including effective intervention strategies as well as accommodations that can be applied for.

Integrative Therapy

As a therapist I am interested in listening to you and trying to help you understand how past experiences, often from childhood, affect your life today and the way you view yourself.

Together with the therapist, you can think in a different way about your past, present, and future. The therapist doesn’t tell you what to do, be directive or give advice, but in the forming of the relationship with the therapist, you will find it helps you to make your own choices.

There is no particular point in life when people turn towards therapy, but it is often when confronted by some sense of not being able to move forward, or change. Significant events such as bereavement and loss, relationship difficulties, questioning who one is or feeling unable to get over past events are common reasons for seeking a therapist. Depression and anxiety are often present and very hard to get over alone.
